Responsibilities

Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Lead Diesel Truck Mechanic to join and guide our skilled maintenance team at the railyard. In this critical leadership role, you will oversee the inspection, diagnosis, and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, diesel, and electrical systems on a fleet of semi-trucks, trailers, and hostler vehicles. You’ll ensure timely preventative maintenance, lead troubleshooting efforts, and uphold the highest standards of safety, performance, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead daily shop operations, prioritizing repair tasks, allocating work, and mentoring mechanics to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality standards.

  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines (Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit), ensuring optimal vehicle and equipment performance.

  • Troubleshoot and repair complex electrical systems using wiring diagrams and schematics.

  • Perform and oversee routine preventive maintenance on all tractors, trailers, and yard hostlers to reduce downtime and prevent failures.

  • Conduct in-depth vehicle assessments and coordinate responses to both scheduled maintenance and emergency breakdowns.

  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and parts used, ensuring documentation aligns with safety protocols and regulatory compliance.

  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Supervisor to communicate repair statuses, resource needs, and long-term maintenance planning.

  • Promote and enforce safety standards across all maintenance operations, ensuring all team members follow best practices.

Qualifications

 

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic, including leadership or team lead responsibilities.
  • 3–5 years of experience working as a diesel mechanic, with experience on semi-trucks, trailers, or hostler vehicles. 

  • Proficiency in diagnostic tools and mechanical repairs, including diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to work with schematics and troubleshoot electrical issues effectively.

  • Familiarity with maintenance scheduling systems and keeping accurate service records.

  • Proven organizational and leadership skills with the ability to coach and support technicians.

  • Strong troubleshooting and mechanical skills

  • Experience with hostlers and forklifts is a plus

  • Experience with electric trucks is a plus

  • Knowledge of all diesel engine systems, including fuel, electrical, cooling, and exhaust

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs and work in all weather conditions

  • Must own necessary tools for the job

  • Must pass a pre-employment background verification, physical and drug screening
    • The Federal Rail Administration sets and enforces safety regulations and standards for railroad operations. Use of cannabis is strictly prohibited. If applicable for the position you are applying to, and if you are offered the position, you will have to take and pass a drug screen.

Preferred Experience:

  • ASE Certification or equivalent is a plus

  • Experience with Caterpillar, Cummins, and Detroit diesel engines.

  • Experience with hostler trucks and terminal tractors.

  • Welding or fabrication skills a plus.

  • Experience working in an intermodal yard or rail yard environment.
